Lapco International have agreed a partnership with CMR Surgical (CMR), the company behind the surgical robotic system Versius®, to deliver a series of Lapco Train the Trainer (TT) programmes to UK robotic surgeons.
Scheduled for May 2021, Lapco have developed a bespoke programme to enhance the training skills of surgeons who use CMR’s Versius® – a next-generation surgical robotic system. Versius has been adopted across a range of surgical specialties including Gynaecology, Colorectal, and General Surgery, and used to perform over 1,000 surgical procedures across India and Europe.
Each course will train up to six surgeons, improving their abilities as Trainers to ensure safe and effective adoption of minimal access (Robotic) surgery.
CMR Co-founder and Chief Medical Officer Mark Slack said: “As surgical robotics is increasingly adopted, we have a responsibility to ensure optimal training of Versius which begins with our trainers and surgeon preceptors. CMR has always had a strong focus on the responsible introduction of surgical robotics in which training plays a key role. Lapco has an excellent reputation, and we are delighted to be working with them to deliver their Train the Trainers programme.”
Tom Cecil, Lapco Trainer and Colorectal Surgeon said: “Robotic surgery is developing rapidly and helping surgeons to deliver a higher quality of care to patients. Our training programmes play an essential role to help increase adoption rates in a safe and practical way. With CMR, we are excited to be working with a cutting-edge partner to help transform surgery for the better.”

The Versius® Surgical Robotic System
Versius® resets expectations of robotic surgery. Versius fits into virtually any operating room set-up and integrates seamlessly into existing workflows, increasing the likelihood of robotic minimal access surgery (MAS). The portable and modular design of Versius allows the surgeon to only use the number of arms needed for a given procedure.
Biomimicking the human arm, Versius gives surgeons the choice of optimised port placement alongside the dexterity and accuracy of small fully-wristed instruments. With 3D HD vision, easy-to adopt instrument control and a choice of ergonomic working positions, the open surgeon console has the potential to reduce stress and fatigue and allows for clear communication with the surgical team. By thinking laparoscopically and operating robotically with Versius, patients, surgeons and healthcare professionals can all benefit from the value that robotic MAS brings.
